Tens of thousands of Thailand’s United Front for Democracy againstDictatorship (UDD) members, or the Red Shirts, are gathering on thewestern outskirts of Bangkok to show their support for caretaker PrimeMinister Yingluck Shinawatra.
ParadornPattanatabut, security advisor of PM Yingluck, said that the two-dayrally, started on April 5, is expected to attract more than 200,000 UDDdemonstrators.
It is consider the largest rally by the Red Shirts since the country’s political crisis began several months ago.
More than 3,000 police officers and soldiers were sent to ensure security at the rally site.
No incidents of violence have been reported between the UDDdemonstrators and anti-government protesters, who also staged their ownrally on the day at Lumpini Park in downtown Bangkok, a long way fromthe site of red shirts.
The UDD’s rally comes at atime when Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) isinvestigating Yingluck for an alleged dereliction of duty in running arice-pledging scheme.-VNA
