Thailand’s caretaker cabinet on May 7 appointed Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan as new caretaker Prime Minister in place of Yingluck Shinawatra, who was removed from office the same day by a court verdict.

Thai Deputy PM Phongthep Thepkanjana revealed the appointment to reporters, adding that the caretaker government will still hold the general election on July 20.

Niwatthamrong was acting Deputy PM and Commerce Minister under Yingluck’s caretaker cabinet. He used to work as a top executive of the Shin Corporation, a privately-owned conglomerate belonging to the Shinawatra family.

Thailand’s Constitutional Court decided to remove Yingluck from her position after finding her guilty of abusing power by sanctioning the removal of a security chief in 2011.

Nine other caretaker cabinet members have also been removed from office for their involvement in dropping Security Council chief Thawil Pliensri from his position.-VNA
