Bangkok (VNA) – The Supreme Court of Thailand on June 2 sentenced redshirt leader Jatuporn Prompan to six months in jail and a fine of 50,000 THB (roughly 1,400 USD) for defaming former Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejajiva in January 2009.

Speaking at a press conference on January 13, 2009, Jatuporn said former PM Abhisit did not show respect to the King as he sat on a seat equal to the King’s during a meeting.

By handing down the sentence, the court reversed the appeal court’s rule on July 10, 2014 that found that Jatuporn was not guilty.

However, Jatuporn is allowed to delay the implementation of the sentence by two years as he has no previous conviction.-VNA
