Thanh Hoa (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has urged the north central province of Thanh Hoa to continuously improve its strength and competitiveness, and strive for rapid and sustainable growth.

Attending the province’s 990th anniversary on May 8, PM Phuc suggested Thanh Hoa should employ its heroic past and rich traditions as the basis of its impetus to grow into a prosperous, modern and civilised locality.

He said that Thanh Hoa has been the origin of several Vietnamese feudal dynasties, as well as the hometown of renowned national heroes who were still revered by Vietnamese people today such as Trieu Thi Trinh, Le Hoan and Le Loi.

In modern history, late President Ho Chi Minh called Thanh Hoa the “capital of the revolutionary movement”, which managed to balance both critical missions of building socialism in the northern region and supplying resources to the battles against the Americans in the southern region, contributing significantly to the final victory in April 1975.

He also said 30 years since Doi Moi (renewal), Thanh Hoa has made impressive strides with many large-scale projects transforming the province either finished or underway.

In the future, the province should focus on the five pillars of growth – manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, healthcare, and urbanisation – and upgrades of local infrastructure with the Nghi Son Economic Zone at its heart, Phuc stated.

The Government leader urged the province to speed up the process of key projects that have major implications to socio-economic development, including coastal roads, highways, tourism and airway infrastructure.

The province was asked to maintain efforts to step up administrative reform, improve its business and investment environment and increase provincial competitiveness with the aim to enter top 15 localities in terms of provincial competitiveness index.

At the ceremony, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Trinh Van Chien said that the province is striving to obtain middle-income status by 2020 to balance its own expenditure-revenue, and then the province can contribute more to the State budget.

Chien also stated Thanh Hoa is expecting to climb into the group of economically strong provinces by 2030.

Within the framework of his working visit to Thanh Hoa, PM Phuc visited an exhibition themed “Thanh Hoa – Past and Present” on May 8 morning.-VNA
