Thanh Hoa (VNA) – The centralprovince of Thanh Hoa launched a Humanitarian Month on May 7 with manyactivities designed to support vulnerable groups on the occasion of the World RedCross and Red Crescent Day (May 8).
At the launching ceremony held in Ha Trungdistrict, organisations and individuals donated nearly 16 billion VND (687,000USD) to fund activities during the month.
Addressing the ceremony,Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society Trinh Thi Tiep highlighted theimportance and meaning of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, which extendsa helping hand to vulnerable people in the community.
The society called on all peoplein the province to donate to help those in need and reported that it gavesupport to more than 352,000 persons last year at total funding of more than 75billion VND through such models as charity fairs, “cow bank”, “compassionatekitchen” and volunteer clubs.
The same day, severalhumanitarian events sponsored by the province’s Red Cross Society took placeacross the district in response to the Month, including the provision of free healthchecks-up and medicines for 700 needy people in Ha Trung’s Ha Binh commune, thestart of construction work of several houses for families in disadvantagedcircumstances in Ha Duong and Ha Vinh communes, and the present of 20 cows topoor households in Ha Vinh commune.-VNA
