The third Post & Logistics Conference of the Union Network International – Asia/Pacific Regional Organisation (UNI-Apro) opened in Hanoi on December 12, drawing the participation of representatives from Asia-Pacific countries and the world.

The conference offers a chance for the participants to discuss many important issues of the postal sector such as the global financial crisis’ impacts on the sector, postal technologies and modernisation, postal financial service and future UNI-Apro Post priorities.

They will also discuss measures to cope with the global crisis’ negative impacts on labourers’ life and trade union activities as well as to promote the role of trade unions in protecting labourers’ interests.

Speaking at the event, President of the Vietnam Post Trade Union Hoang Huy Loat said that the Vietnam Post has split from the telecom sector since January 1, 2008 and then become an independent unit with its staff of 30,000.

Under the Vietnam Post development plan by 2010, the Vietnam Post Corporation is responsible for mobilising and effectively using investment sources for the postal sector, he added.

From December 12-18, the delegates will continue to attend the ASEAN Telecom Trade Union Conference and a meeting of Asia-Pacific countries’ service sector trade unions./.
