Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam is playing its increasingly active role in the global human rights system, Dennis Curry from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said at a seminar in Hanoi on December 10 in response to World Human Rights Day.

Curry said Vietnam has ratified 7 out of 9 major international conventions on human rights, held a number of seminars on human rights, and is currently serving as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

He hailed Vietnam for accepting and implementing many recommendations to ensure human rights, particularly the recent adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Convention against Torture.

He also noted that the Vietnamese NA has adopted the revised Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, which have made positive changes in meeting international standards on human rights, he said.

Vice Dean of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV)’s International Law Department Trinh Hai Yen said the Universal Declaration on Human Rights adopted by the United Nations nearly 70 years ago marked a historic milestone regarding the promotion of basic human rights and the common efforts to issue a set of universal humane values across the world.

The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry is tasked with coordinating a comprehensive plan on implementing recommendations accepted by Vietnam during the UNHRC’s universal periodic review across the political, socio-economic, information and education fields.

The event was co-hosted by the DAV, the Foreign Ministry and UNDP.-VNA
