The State-run Southern Seed Joint Stock Company opened its representative office in Vientiane, Laos on February 25 to expand its market share in the country.

Director General of the company Hang Phi Quang said his firm has provided corn seed for Laos since 1998 via the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

As of 2013, it has exported more than 700 tonnes of corn seed to Laos, representing an approximate 20 percent market share.

With the new office, the company targets a market share of over 30 percent in Laos within two or three years.

Apart from seed provision, the business has assisted Lao farmers in raising production output by teaching them agricultural knowledge and piloting high-yield farming models.

For their part, officials of the Lao agriculture ministry welcomed the Vietnamese office and expressed their hope that the firm’s quality products will help their localities, particularly eight northern provinces, step up poverty alleviation, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the Vietnam–Laos relations.-VNA
