Vietnam applauds IAEA’s role and efforts

Vietnam commends the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its achievements in all three pillars, namely science and technology, safety and security, and safeguards and verification.

Ambassador NguyenPhuong Nga, Permanent representative of Vietnam at the United Nationsmade the remarks at a plenary session of the General Assembly on “Reportof the International Atomic Energy Agency” held in New York on November3.

“We applaud the IAEA’s continued efforts, among others, toassist over 30 countries, including Vietnam, in preparing theinfrastructure necessary for introducing nuclear power into their energymix,” she said.

As the Chair of the IAEA Board of Governors forthe term of 2013-2014, Vietnam has made active contributions, in abalanced and constructive manner, to realising the objectives andmissions of the IAEA, Nga affirmed.

Vietnam advocates thepeaceful use of nuclear energy and technology for development in linewith the international obligations, she said.

Since 2000, theagency has been assisting Vietnam in implementing over 200 technicalcooperation projects at national, regional and inter-regional levelswith a total disbursement of over 15 million USD. More than 1,200Vietnamese scientists and technicians have benefited from varioustraining programmes.

Under the current Country ProgrammeFramework (CPR) period 2011-2015, the cooperation between the IAEA andVietnam has brought about productive results in the main areas ofnuclear power infrastructure and nuclear safety, health care andindustrial applications and environmental protection. In 2013, in closecollaboration with the IAEA, Vietnam prepared feasibility studies of twosites for its first nuclear power plants.

“Vietnam’s strongcommitment to peaceful use of nuclear energy and to conducting nuclearpower programmes to the highest safety standards has been widelyacknowledged,” Nga stressed.

On this occasion, the diplomatthanked all member states, international partners and the IAEA for theirvaluable support and cooperation so that Vietnam could fulfil herresponsibilities.-VNA
