A Vietnamese delegation headed by Nguyen Thi Hoa, Chairwoman of theVietnamese Women’s Union (VWU) attended an international forum on womenheld in Shanghai , China from September 16-18.

The forum, themed “Women in urban development and the 15th anniversaryof the fourth World Summit on women”, saw the participation of nearly300 delegates from governments, parliaments, organisations andenterprises from 50 countries and territories worldwide as well as theUnited Nations, regional and international women’s organisations.

Addressing the ministerial-level meeting, Chairwoman Hoa highlighted thecommitment and great endeavours made by the Vietnamese government aswell as achievements the country has recorded to promote women’sprogress and gender equality.

Over the past 15years, the process of urbanisation in many countries has brought aboutopportunities for citizens in general and women in particular to benefitfrom economic development and social progress and civilisation.

However, urbanisation has also posed a number of challenges to women, especially those with unstable working and living conditions and thosewith inefficient social welfare services.

Theproportion of female leaders does not match their capacity andcontributions and the gender inequality has been shown in jobassignment, preconception about gender and the incomprehensiveevaluation of women’s capacity.

The forum adopted ajoint commitment to further promote the programme of action for genderequality in an effort to fulfill the targets set in the BeijingDeclaration and Platform for Action, the Committee on Elimination ofDiscrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Millennium DevelopmentGoals./.
