During the talks between Deputy Defence Minister, Sen. Lieut. Gen NguyenChi Vinh and his Canadian counterpart Michael Martin, as part of theformer’s visit to Canada from October 30 – November 1, both sides sharedthe view that maritime security and safety, especially sovereigntydisputes on waters in the Asia-Pacific pose a potential threat to worldpeace and stability.
They said that the sovereignty disputesmust be settled by peaceful means in line with international law,especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, theDeclaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and otherASEAN declarations on the East Sea.
The Canadian side spokehighly of the ASEAN’s role in promoting multilateral securitycooperation mechanisms in the region, especially those on defencebetween ASEAN and its partners like the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ MeetingPlus (ADMM+).
Canada hopes for Vietnam’s support so that the country can join the ADMM+, Martin said.
Vinh conveyed Defence Minister, Gen. Phung Quang Thanh’s invitationto Canadian Minister of National Defence Robert Nicholson to visitVietnam in the coming time.
During the visit, the first by ahigh-ranking delegation from the Defence Ministry of Canada, Vietnameseofficials also paid a courtesy call to Chief of the Canadian DefenceStaff, Gen. Tomas Lawson and visited the Peace Support Training Centreand several army units.
The visit was made within theframework of the activities celebrating the 40 th anniversary of theestablishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations.-VNA
