Minister of Natural Resource and Environment Pham Khoi Nguyen has acknowledged the environmental pollution in Vietnam has reached an alarming level despite numerous steps taken by the Government.

Nguyen told representatives from 40 countries and international organisations at a regional meeting of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), opened in Hanoi on October 19, that the problem has prompted from the nation’s dynamic economy growth, population booming and fast urbaninsation.

He added urbanisation has also led to the dwindling of agricultural land, that may impact on food security and increase risks of rural poverty on a larger scale.

“Worst still, in a geographical position lower than the sea water level and with a long trip of coastal land, Vietnam has been warned to be one of five countries face worst impact by climate change and rising sea water level”.

“Therefore, part of the national territory, including rich alluvial soil in the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta, is at a high risk of being submerged, thus threatening food security and causing huge pressure upon the environment and livelihood of millions of people,” Nguyen emphasised.

He explained that those threats loom over the country despite the Government and entire society have always paid great attention to land and environmental issues.

“Responsible agencies have made tireless efforts to complete the legal system, increase the feasibility of relevant plans and mitigate negative impact caused by economic development on the environment,” concluded the minister.

Organisers expected the four-day meeting will provide an opportunity for domestic experts and relevant agencies to update their knowledge and draw experiences from the international community to apply them to the Vietnamese reality.

The Vietnam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing has joined with the FIG in holding this event./.
