Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuchas said the hosting of the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam contributes torealising the motto “Vietnam is an active and responsible member ofinternational community” set by the 11th National Party Congress in 2011.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency on theoccasion, the PM explained that being a responsible member means proactivelyengaging in seeking measures to solve regional and global issues, thus bringingpeace, stability, and development, which is also in line with the directionmade by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central CommitteeNguyen Phu Trong at the Diplomatic Conference in August 2018.

That Hanoi was chosen as the venue for the second summitbetween the DPRK and the US is clear evidence for Vietnam’s improving role andposition in both the region and the world, he said.

PM Phuc noted that after joining the United Nations (UN) in1977, Vietnam had served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Councilfor the 2008-2009 tenure and is now the only candidate of the Asia-Pacificgroup for a non-permanent seat on the council for the 2020-2021 tenure.

In the region, Vietnam is an important member of ASEAN and asignificant diplomatic partner to countries across the world, he said.

With experience in holding large-scale summits like the APEC EconomicLeaders' Week 2017 and the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2018, Vietnam will doits best to successfully hold the summit, he said.

According tothe PM, Hanoi has basically completed the preparations. He expressed hope thatvia the event, Vietnam will become a bridge for the settlement of the nuclearissue on the Korean peninsula and play a role as a partner to build peace onthe Korean peninsula and the region.

As ASEANChair in 2020 and candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Councilfor the 2020-2021 tenure, Vietnam believes that it can make more activecontributions to the peace process on the Korean peninsula, as well as towards peaceand sustainable development in the world, the leader stated.

He expressedhis belief that as a responsible and dedicated member of the internationalcommunity, Vietnam will become a trustworthy destination for majorinternational conferences of the region and the world in the future. –VNA
