The 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) will take place for the first time in Vietnam from July 17-24 next year with the participation of over 1,000 candidates from 70 countries and territories.
A campaign was held in Hanoi on September 7 to encourage local teachers and students to engage in the event.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien said Vietnam has participated in the IBO since 1996.
After 20 years of engagement, Vietnamese students brought home 56 medals, including one gold, 10 silvers, 45 bronzes and two certificates of merit, he boasted.
He shared that Vietnam once successfully organised the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2004, the International Mathematics Olympiad in 2007, the International Physics Olympiad in 2008, and the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2014.
Following the success of the international Olympiads in Vietnam, the organisation of the 27th IBO will contribute to the implementation of the diplomatic policy and integration guideline of the Party and State to enhance cooperation with countries in the region and beyond, Hien said.
This also aims to promote learning movements and improve quality of human resources for the country, as well as developing friendship and exchanges among teachers and students of countries, encouraging international understanding and cooperation, and promoting the image of Vietnam to foreign friends, he added.
The ministry is urgently preparing for the event and all conditions have been basically completed, he noted.
To ensure success, he urged relevant agencies to continue disseminating the contest while working with the IBO committee to implement professional activities.
Hanoi Education University which will observe the 27th IBO is requested to prepare all necessary material facilities to serve the event.
Vietnam looks toward to the event via pragmatic actions such as eradicating discharge of pollutants to the environment; using biological measures in cultivation; creating clean and safety products, he added.-VNA
