Vietnam vows to boost ASEAN sports cooperation at AMMS-8

Vietnam pledges to work with other ASEAN member states and partners to realise shared goals, making sports a source of pride for the ASEAN Community and contributing to building a peaceful, prosperous and cohesive region, said Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh.

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam pledges to work with other ASEAN member states and partners to realise shared goals, making sports a source of pride for the ASEAN Community and contributing to building a peaceful, prosperous and cohesive region, said Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh.

Addressing the opening of the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-8) in Hanoi on October 16, Deputy PM Chinh described the meeting as a platform to share visions, strengthen cooperation and shape a sustainable and distinctive future for ASEAN sports.

Reaffirming Vietnam’s consistent stance that people are the centre, subject, goal, resource and driving force of development, he said the country’s sports development strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2045, aims to build a sustainable and professional sports sector. The strategy envisions universal access to sports services, encouraging citizens to exercise voluntarily to improve their health, fitness and quality of life.

He suggested discussions on five key priorities, including sports for all, smart and innovative sports, green, clean and sustainable sports, stronger international cooperation between ASEAN and its partners to build a transparent and modern sports ecosystem, and preserving and upholding the value of traditional sports.

Chinh expressed hope that the meeting would shape a long-term vision for ASEAN sports, including the ASEAN Action Plan on Sports for the 2026–2030 period.

In the afternoon, the meeting continued discussions on statements delivered by sports ministers from Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Timor-Leste, and heard remarks from San Lwin, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. Delegates adopted the AMMS-8 Joint Statement and addressed other issues.

Cambodia, set to host AMMS-9 in 2027, shared preliminary details on the timing and venue for the next meeting.

Since its inception in Indonesia in 2011, the AMMS has convened biennially, growing into an important high-level forum to foster cooperation, policy exchange, and joint action in sports across ASEAN.

In 2025, Vietnam, under the rotation mechanism, hosts AMMS-8 and related events, including the 5th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports + Japan (AMMS + Japan 5) and the second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports + China (AMMS + China 2)./.

Deputy PM sends off para athletes to ASEAN Para Games 13

Vietnam will send a delegation of 185 members to the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand from January 15-27, 2026. They include 141 athletes, 27 coaches, and 17 officials, competing in 11 sports including athletics, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, chess, judo, boccia, archery, tennis, and fencing.
