A Vietnamese National Assembly delegation led by Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Kien, is on a working to visit to Portugal.

During the visit from Sept. 17-19, the Vietnamese delegation learned about the role of the Portuguese parliament in the deliberation process and in deciding important national issues, particularly in economics, finance, budgeting, opinions, policies and immediate- and long-term measures to maintain high, sustainable economic growth as well as to effectively ensure social security. The Vietnamese legislators also made inquiries about parliamentary organisation and operation, in addition to relations between the parliament, the executive and the judiciary.

At a meeting with the speaker of the Portuguese parliament Jaime Gama, National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Kien briefed him on Vietnam’s socio-economic development in the doi moi (renewal) process and affirmed the country’s socio-economic development policy to push forward with industrialisation and modernisation towards the goal of a rich people, a strong country and a fair, democratic and civilised society.

Kien reiterated Vietnam’s stance of being a friend and trusted partner of all countries.

Vietnam highly lauded Portugal’s socio-economic achievements, he said, adding that the two sides still possess considerable untapped potential, so it is necessary to enhance cooperation, especially in investment, trade, tourism and science and technology, for mutual development.

He put stress on ties between the two parliaments, focusing on stepping up exchange of visits by high-level delegations and agencies of the two legislative bodies, sharing information and experience, and thus contributing to cooperation and coordination at international parliamentary forums.

Portuguese speaker Jaime Gama hailed the current visit by the Vietnamese NA delegation, describing it an important milestone in relations between the two parliaments and people.

While in Portugal , the Vietnamese delegation met Portuguese professors, economists, legislators, and representatives from the foreign ministry and other relevant agencies, as well as paying a visit to a shipyard in Lisbon./.
