Hanoi (VNA) – A training course washeld in Hanoi on March 29 to equipped officers who are going to join UNpeacekeeping missions in 2017 with skills to handle bombs, mines and explosivematerials.

The course was jointly organised by the VietnamPeacekeeping Centre and the US Golden West Humanitarian Foundation (GWHF).

Addressing the opening ceremony, a leader of the centresaid since Vietnam officially joined the UN peacekeeping activities in 2014, ithas sent 12 officers to UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan and CentralAfrican Republic.

Vietnam is actively preparing for the deploymentof a second-level field hospital and a company of sappers, and focusing ontraining female and male soldiers to serve the UN peacekeeping missions in thecoming time.

The centre leader valued the support the GoldenWest has provided for the centre in pre-deployment training over the past time.

For his part, Golden West Country Director inVietnam Lee Moroney said the training course aims to improve Vietnameseofficers’ skills to avoid bombs, mines and explosive materials to ensure theirsafety while performing their tasks in UN peacekeeping missions, especially in SouthSudan.

The event also contributed to strengtheningunderstanding and cooperation between his organisation and Vietnam’s bodies inthe peacekeeping field, he said.-VNA

FLC appeal hearing postponed, giving more time for compensation

After discussions and listening to opinions from lawyers, defendants, and victims present at the trial, the judicial panel stated that postponing the appeal hearing for Trinh Van Quyet, ex-chairman of FLC Group, is necessary to ensure the rights of the victims. The postponement aims to give the defendants and their families more time to pay compensation for victims and those with related rights and obligations.
