The first batch of A/H1N1 flu vaccines may be approved for use by some countries in September, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on August 6.

Marie-Paule Kieny, the Director of the WHO Initiative for Vaccine Research, said several drugmakers had already produced vaccines for the pandemic and clinical trials were now underway.

According to the official, initial clinical trial results of the vaccines could be available early next month and that could lead to the first vaccines being approved by regulators for use.

Meanwhile, the WHO stressed that although there is an urgent need for the approval of the vaccines for use, yet safety should not be compromised. The organisation calls for further testing of safety and effectiveness after administration of the vaccine had begun.

Latest WHO update released on August 6 showed that 162,230 people have contracted the A/H1N1 virus, resulting in 1,154 deaths. However, experts said the figures must be higher in reality.

They also raised concerns that the pandemic would continue to spread during the autumn in the northern hemisphere and forecast that around 2 billion people, or one third of the world’s population, would be affected by the disease./.
