Huynh Thuc Vy sentenced to 2 years and 9 months in prison for insulting the national flag (Source: VNA)
Dak Lak (VNA) – The People’s Court of Buon Ho town in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak on November 30 sentenced Huynh Thuc Vy, 33, to 2 years and 9 months in prison for insulting the national flag following Article 276 of the 1999 Penal Code (revised in 2009).
Vy was also ordered not to leave her place of residence and go abroad.
According to an indictment of the town’s People’s Procuracy, at 11am on September 1, 2017, Vy splashed white paint on the two national flags which were being hung in front of Houses No. 1222 and 1224 on Hung Vuong street, Thong Nhat ward of Buon Ho town on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of August Revolution and National Day (September 2).
She then posted a photo of her standing next to one of the two painted flags on her Facebook page.
Two days later, the flags were detected by the police of Thong Nhat ward, who then handed over them to the town’s police for investigation.
The town police force’s investigation agency started legal proceedings against the case on June 15, 2018 and against Vy on August 9 for charge of insulting the national flag as regulated in Article 276 of the 1999 Penal Code.
Earlier on December 2, 2011, Vy also received an administrative fine of 85 million VND (3,640 USD) for “providing, exchanging, disseminating, storing or using information on the national cyberspace to oppose the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and sabotage the national great unity” from the People’s Committee of central Quang Nam province. However, she has not yet executed the verdict.-VNA
