Workshop spotlights teaching of Vietnamese language, culture to OV children in Japan

A workshop held in Japan’s Fukuoka prefecture on June 3 highlighted the importance of teaching the Vietnamese language and culture to Vietnamese children in Kyushu, the third largest island of the Northeast Asian country.

Tokyo (VNA) – A workshop held in Japan’s Fukuoka prefecture on June 3 highlightedthe importance of teaching the Vietnamese language and culture to Vietnamesechildren in Kyushu, the third largest island of the Northeast Asian country.

Addressingover 120 participants in the hybrid event, Vu Chi Mai, Consul General ofVietnam in Fukuoka, said the workshop was part of activities the Consulate Generalhas carried out under the Prime Minister-approved plan on the Day for honouringthe Vietnamese language in overseas Vietnamese (OV) communities in the 2023 -2030 period. Promoting the language is also part of the Consulate General’sefforts to help develop OV communities and maintain and popularise theVietnamese culture.

She saidteaching the Vietnamese language and culture to OV children will bring about manysubstantial benefits, including enhancing their patriotism, awareness of thehomeland, and understanding of society and also strengthening their bonds withfamilies.

Encouragingthe use of the Vietnamese language in second- and third-generation Vietnamesefamilies in Japan will also help the community develop strongly and create an importantsource of manpower for both countries, Mai went on.

Mai PhanDung, Vice Chairman of the State Committee for OV Affairs, said the Vietnamesecommunity in Japan as well as others around the world have shown their sense ofresponsibility towards younger generations as seen in the organisation of numerouspractical activities to maintain and popularise the homeland’s language,including opening Vietnamese language schools, classes, and centres.

He hailedthe opening of a class giving guidance in how to teach the Vietnamese languageand culture to Vietnamese children in Kyushu, voicing his hope that similarinitiatives will be implemented in not only Northeast Asia but also around theworld.

At theworkshop, experts presented their opinions on issues related to the maintenance andteaching of the Vietnamese language and culture in foreign countries.

On thisoccasion, the Vietnamese People Association in Fukuoka officially debuted aboard for the Vietnamese language to honour and maintain the language andculture in the local OV community./.

Vietnam among countries with high human development: UNDP report

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.

Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.

Khanh Hoa tightens control of fishing vessels at sea ports

As many as 99.7% of Khanh Hoa's fishing vessels over 15 metres in length – 631 out of 633 – have now been equipped with VMS devices.
