Hanoi (VNA) – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao Island in the Philippines on the afternoon of January 28 (local time).

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake had a focal depth of 10km.

Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake occurred at 2:47 p.m near Dinaig, Maguindanao del Norte, in the Mindanao region. The agency estimated the focal depth at 35km, much deeper than the GFZ’s figure.

Based on preliminary seismic data, the EMSC said many people near the epicentre may have felt the tremors. However, there have been no reports of damage so far.

Earthquakes are frequent in the Philippines, as the country lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity stretching across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin./.
