- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the groundbreaking of Cam Thach inter-level school and distributed Lunar New Year (Tet) gifts to disadvantaged families and workers in the central province of Thanh Hoa on February 10.
The new school complex will occupy 11,000 sq.m and feature a three-story administration building, a three-story general classroom block, a three-story specialised subject building, a single-story multi-purpose hall, and a three-story canteen and dormitory facility, all outfitted with modern equipment. - Social development and social equity are central pillars of Vietnam’s national development strategy, with improvements in people’s living standards serving as a key measure of growth, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, has affirmed.
He made the remarks at the 64th session of the UN Commission for Social Development (CSocD), held in New York from February 2-10, under the theme “Advancing social development and social justice through coordinated, equitable and inclusive policies”. According to official statistics, the country welcomed nearly 2.5 million international visitors in January, up 21.4% month-on-month and 18.5% year-on-year. - A programme discovering Vietnam, held on the morning of February 10 at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi, has offered visitors a chance to explore and experience a series of traditional royal court ceremonies under the theme “Tong cuu nghinh tan” (farewell to the old, welcome the new), highlighting the cultural depth of the country’s Lunar New Year (Tet).
Organised by the municipal People’s Committee in coordination with the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the programme recreated a range of ceremonial practices once performed in the royal court. These included the Tien lich ritual, in which calendars were formally distributed to the court and the public; the Thuong tieu ceremony featuring the ceremonial New Year pole erected to ward off evil spirits and welcome spring; the ritual release of carp to send the Kitchen Gods to heaven; and the solemn changing-of-the-guard ceremony inside the imperial citadel.
