Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- The 15th NationalAssembly (NA) convened its fifth plenary session in Hanoi on May 22 morning,broadcast live on the channels of radio The Voice of Vietnam (VOV1), theVietnam Television (VTV1), and the National Assembly TV.

During the session, the NA will consider andapprove eight draft laws, three draft resolutions. Legislators will also giveopinions on nine draft laws and look into socio-economic issues, theState budget, and supervision, among others. Read full story

- Prime Minister PhamMinh Chinh’s freshly ended trip for attendance at the expanded Summit of theGroup of Seven (G7) and a working visit to Japan was a success in bothbilateral and multilateral aspects, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Sontold the media following the visit.

According to FM Son, during nearly three days inJapan, PM Chinh chaired and attended about 40 activities, including workingsessions and meetings with Japanese leaders as well as circles, businesses,friends in Japan, along with leaders of countries and internationalorganisations. Read full story

- Ship 20 of the NavalRegion 3’s Brigade 172 with a working delegation of the Vietnam People’s Navyon board arrived in Malaysia’s Langkawi to attend the 16th InternationalMaritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2023.

Accordingly, from May 23-28, the ship and theworking delegation will participate in LIMA 2023 activities, including displayof naval vessels, an exhibition to introduce career opportunities in theMalaysian navy, ship parade, LIMA exercise at sea. Read full story

- Deputy Prime MinisterTran Hong Ha has requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to accelerate theprocess of issuing electricity licenses for wind and solar power projects thathave been completed but have not yet been put into operation.

The Government Office recently issued a Notice onDeputy PM Ha’s conclusion at a meeting related to the negotiations ofelectricity price for these projects. Read full story

- In their recentlyreleased international religious freedom reports, the US Department of Stateand the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), on one handrecognised Vietnam’s certain progress in promoting religious freedom and citingsome official information from Government agencies of Vietnam but on the otherstill includes inobjective assessments based on unverified and inaccurateinformation about the reality in Vietnam.

The State of ethnically and religiously diverseVietnam has consistently carried out the policy of respecting and guaranteeingpeople’s right to freedom of belief and religion, as well as the right tofollow or not to follow any belief or religion; ensured the equality andindiscrimination in terms of religion and belief; and protected activities ofreligious organisations by the law. The country’s efforts and achievements inthis regard have been widely recognised by the international community. Read full story

- An inspection teamfrom the European Commission (EC) will visit Vietnam to examine the country’sefforts on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention andcontrol in October instead of May as it announced earlier, Tran Dinh Luan,Director of the Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture andRural Development (MARD) said on May 21.

Luan said that the EC suggested the organisationof online working sessions with Vietnamese authorities in May, June and Octoberbefore sending the team to Vietnam. Read full story

- The Government Officehas issued an official document on COVID-19 prevention and control in the newcontext, mentioning the possibility of announcing the end of the pandemic. 

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned theMinistry of Health to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies toprepare a dossier to reclassify COVID-19 from group A to group B infectiousdisease and announce the end of the pandemic and submit it to the PM forconsideration. Read full story

- Management boards ofbiosphere reserves nationwide have taken initiatives and solutions to conserveand sustainably use natural resources, thus implementing Vietnam’s sustainabledevelopment goals and promoting tourism development, according to DeputyMinister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan.

The world biosphere reserves in Vietnam are notonly UNESCO-recognised designations but are also gradually becoming models ofsustainable socio-economic development for local communities, Nhan said./. Read full story

Top Vietnamese leader meets with French Prime Minister

Vietnam attaches importance to its relations with France, one of its leading partners in Europe and on the international stage, and wishes to continue close coordination with France to deepen the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a substantive and effective manner.

Spouses of Vietnamese, Mongolian top legislators hold meeting

Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga, spouse of President of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) Tran Thanh Man, had a meeting with Gantsetseg Tsendsuren, spouse of Chairman of the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia Sandag Byambatsogt, in Ulaanbaatar on September 10.

Deputy PM works with Mongolian counterpart

The two sides noted that Vietnam-Mongolia relations have seen substantial progress across a variety of fields, particularly since the two countries established a Comprehensive Partnership during General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam’s visit to Mongolia in September 2024.

Vietnam, France seek new impetus for comprehensive strategic partnership

The official visit to France by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam from September 9-12 demonstrates the close ties the two countries have built and maintained, according to Dr. Sophie Boisseau du Rocher, a member of the Asie21 research group and former researcher at the Centre for Asian Studies of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI).

In his speech, General Secretary and President Lam recalled the late leader’s years abroad seeking a path to national liberation and thanked the French people for their support during his years in France.
