An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 rocked Japan 's Hachijojima island, south of Tokyo , said the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Tokyo quoted the agency as saying that the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 07:49 a.m. (local time) on Aug. 13, located some 40km below the surface of the sea off Hachijojima.

The tremor was also felt in Tokyo as well as Fukushima, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning and there was no reports of casualties or property damage.

Earlier, an earthquake, also measuring 6.5, struck central Japan on Aug. 11, left one person dead and more than 120 injured. It also damaged nearly 5,000 houses in Shizuoka prefecture and adjacent areas./.
