Buenos Aires (VNA) – The historic victory of the Vietnamese people on April 30, 1975 was the result of solidarity, courage, and revolutionary heroism under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), most notably President Ho Chi Minh, said journalist Gabriel Mazzarovich, head of the ideology commission of the Communist Party of Uruguay Central Committee.
Making his assessment in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent in South America on the occasion of Vietnam’s 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification, Mazzarovich emphasised that the date marked a resounding victory in Vietnam’s struggle for national independence and the complete liberation of the country. He noted that the triumph of the Vietnamese people in their resistance war against the US imperialists marked a historic turning point in the global struggle for liberation and signified a decisive defeat for imperialism and colonialism.
The journalist added that the ideological and political views of President Ho Chi Minh, as adopted and applied by the CPV, made a significant contribution to the global struggle for liberation and the advancement of socialism.
On the achievements Vietnam has made in the five decades since reunification, Mazzarovich said the country has witnessed great strides in building a new society, pursuing socialism, improving living standards, enhancing cultural life for millions, and protecting human rights.
He pointed out that today, Vietnam is a fast-developing nation with notable increases in goods and services output, product diversification, and rapid industrialisation. It is also advancing in high technology and has achieved substantial progress in foreign relations, thanks in part to its “bamboo diplomacy” – a visionary approach that has enabled the nation to expand diplomatic and trade ties worldwide while contributing to stability in Asia and promoting peace.
Expressing his confidence in the upcoming National Congress of the CPV, Mazzarovich believed it would provide a clear roadmap for key objectives of maintaining peace, security and order, fostering rapid and sustainable socio-economic development, and improving the quality of life for all, especially the working class.
Recalling the solidarity movement with Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s, the Uruguayan journalist noted that members of the Communist Party and communist youth of Uruguay regarded the Vietnamese people’s struggle as their own.
He highlighted how Vietnam’s resistance efforts were covered daily by El Popular, the Communist Party of Uruguay’s official newspaper. A notable moment in that movement was an interview with President Ho Chi Minh conducted by journalist Niko Schvarz, with excerpts from the interview now on display in a Vietnamese museum.
Mazzarovich also shared that the flag of the communist youth of Uruguay is modelled on Vietnam’s national flag, symbolising deep respect for the country's heroic struggle. Names such as President Ho Chi Minh, martyr Nguyen Van Troi, and General Vo Nguyen Giap remain present in the memory and activities of Uruguay's communist organisations to this day.
He concluded that the tradition of solidarity with the Vietnamese people remains alive, with the building of a public space in Montevideo named ‘Vietnam’, to honour the Vietnamese people's struggle, being in the final stages./.
