Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodia will set up a Supreme Council for Consultations and Recommendations as a consultation forum between the government and political parties on the matters of national interests.

The formation of the council was agreed by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and other political parties, the PM said on August 23.

He said that he initiated the establishment of the council during a meeting on August 21 with the leaders of 16 political parties out of the 20 parties that took part in the July 29 general election.

Speaking to about 17,500 garment factory workers in southern Kandal province, he said that leaders of those political parties have provided their full support for this initiative.

Although the people have given entire power to the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), in both the parliament and the government, he needs to mobilize human resources and idea resources for the sake of national development, the PM said.

The PM said the council will be formed by a royal decree, and it has duties to provide opinions on government policies, give feedback on draft laws and report on inaction or violations by government officials.

The prime minister said the council, to be presided by a rotating chairperson among political parties every month, will hold a consultation forum with him once every six months.-VNA
