Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian Senate on October 20 approved the amendments to four election laws that were adopted by the National Assembly earlier this week, allowing the redistribution of the seats of the main opposition party CNRP to other parties if it is dissolved.

Forty out of 61 senators voted to support the amendments.

The amendments mean the seats of any party dissolved will be divided between other parties, as set out in the legislation. Methods and formulation of distributing the seats to other parties are also defined in the new laws.

On October 6, Cambodia’s Ministry of the Interior filed a complaint to the Supreme Court, requesting the dissolution of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). Earlier, the Cambodian Youth Party and the Funcinpec Party filed complaints to the Ministry of the Interior, asking for the dissolution of the CNRP after its leader Kem Sokha was charged with treason.-VNA
