The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) claimed victory in the fifth general election which took place on July 28.
Preliminary results show that the CPP gained 68 seats and theopposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) got the remaining 55seats in the polls, said Khieu Kanharith, spokesman for the governmentand the CPP.
The official results from the National ElectionCommittee (NEC) are still unavailable by far. According to theconstitution, the first session of the new National Assembly will beconvened no later than 60 days after the elections.
Cambodia holds a general election every five years. In the lastelection in July 2008, the CPP won 90 seats out of the 123 seats in theNational Assembly, the Sam Rainsy Party gained 26 seats, the HumanRights Party got 3 seats and the royalist group Funcinpec won 2 seats.The Sam Rainsy Party in 2012 merged with the Human Rights Party into theCambodian National Rescue Party.-VNA
