China plans to have a nationwide express railway network in place by 2012, capable of carrying passenger between Beijing and most capital cities in China within eight hours.

As about 10,000 km of passenger railway are currently under construction, this will bring the total length of new rail in operation to 13,000km in 2012, Xinhua news agency reported, citing sources from the Ministry of Railways.

The network would consist of four north-south and four west-east rail lines throughout the country, which would connect most major cities in China, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taiyuan and Nanjing .

China plans to invest at least 700 billion CNY (102.49 billion USD) per year in railway construction over the next three years, Vice Railway Minister Wang Zhiguo said.

By the end of this year, China will have a total of 86,000 km of rail, second only to the United States, Wang said./.
