Commemoration of one year after earthquake hits Japan

The Japanese Embassy in Hanoi has held a ceremony to commemorate one year since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit.
On Mar. 9 the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi held a ceremony to commemorate one year since the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan claimed more than 15,000 lives and left 3,000 others missing.

When addressing the ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yasuaki Tanizaki, said that it is the worst disaster in living memory.

At the time, Japan received spiritual and material assistance from Vietnam and other countries across the world, said the Japanese diplomat, adding that so far Japan has received financial assistance worth more than 346.6 billion JPY, equivalent to nearly 88 trillion VND, with 80 percent going to the victims themselves.

The Japanese people are grateful to Vietnam and other international friends for their valuable assistance which has helps Japan to quickly recover, said Ambassador Tanizaki.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his sympathy over the suffering that the Japanese people have had to face.

He praised Japan for the amount of ODA it sends to Vietnam and said he believes that the Japanese people will soon overcome their current difficulties and added that Vietnam do its utmost to help Japan.

Photos of the destruction and the current reconstruction process are also on display.

Later a documentary of the great earthquake in eastern Japan was also screened at the Japanese Culture Exchange Centre in Vietnam.-VNA
