Electric fence planned along Malaysia-Thailand border

Malaysia will install a 141 km-long electric fence along its border section with Thailand in Kelantan state to curb cross-border crimes, according to Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Malaysia will install a 141 km-long electric fence along its bordersection with Thailand in Kelantan state to curb cross-border crimes,according to Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid said the project will include 121 kilometres of riverboundary and 20 kilometres of land boundary and it is expected to becompleted in three years.

Malaysian Prime MinisterNajib Tun Razak has agreed in principle on the project, the ministersaid, adding that his ministry will continue discussions and collectingopinions from relevant ministries, including the finance ministry.

He said the construction of the fence is important to eradicatesmuggling activities, especially drugs, firearms and human trafficking.

In a recent press conference in Tunjung Kelantan,Ahmad Zahid said it is necessary to discuss the project withthe Kelan tan state’s governor, because the fence will involve landbelonging to the state government.-VNA
