Forty-five Vietnamese have been selected to study in the US in the fall of 2012 under fellowships granted by the Vietnam Education Fund (VEF).

The fellowships are in the fields of sciences, engineering, mathematics, medicine and technology, said Dr Lynne McNamara, VEF executive director, who announced the selections at a press meeting in HCM City on Aug. 11.

A VEF delegation of 12 US scientists and professors in Vietnam began the selection process on August 4.

During this round of the selection process, they conducted oral exams and interviews of 76 VEF fellowship finalists.

"The highly recognised VEF Fellowship programme enables the best minds of Vietnam to pursue their dreams of getting a graduate degree in these fields in one of the outstanding research universities in the US ," said Dr McNamara.

During their visit to Vietnam , the US delegation also conducted 12 scientific lectures and meetings at eight universities and research institutes in Ha Noi and HCM City .

VEF, an initiative of the US Congress and federal agency funded by the US Government, is in its ninth year of operation.

The VEF Fellowship Programme has placed 385 fellows at 82 top US graduate institutions, mostly for doctoral degrees.

About 100 of these VEF fellows have returned to Vietnam. /.
