Hanoi culls thousands of pigs due to African swine fever

Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi had culled more than 387,500 farmed pigs infectedwith African swine fever (ASF), or 20.7 percent of the city’s total herd byJune 16.

According to the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Department, theASF affected an additional 1,839 livestock households in four communes, forcingthe local authorities to kill over 33,700 pigs during June 10-16.

To date, the disease has hit 23,125 households, accounting for 28.6 percent oftotal pig raisers, in 2,150 villages in 439 communes, wards and towns of 24districts in the city.

A large number of culled pigs due the disease was reported in Soc Son district(65,983 pigs), Dong Anh district (38,894 pigs), Quoc Oai district (28,503pigs), and Chuong My district (26,337 pigs).

African swine fever does not affecthumans but causes haemorrhagic fever in pigs and wild boars that is almostalways fatal. There is currently no antidote or vaccine, with the only knownpreventative measure being a mass cull of infected livestock. The diseasespreads by contact between infected pigs or other wild animals and can inflictmassive economic damage on farms.-VNA

The two gold medallists are Tran Trung Kien, a 12th grader from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, who scored 169.25 points, and Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 12th grader from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An province, who scored 151.05 points.

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.
