Hanoi (VNA) – Construction will begin on a new public square and park on the eastern side of Hoan Kiem Lake before October 10.
The 2.14ha project, to be carried out in two phases, is expected to create a new community space for cultural activities, exhibitions, and artistic events, while also enhancing the landscape of the capital’s historic core and one of its major tourist attractions.
According to the People’s Committee of Hoan Kiem ward, the square will be integrated with surrounding green spaces, forming an open public area that is both pedestrian-friendly and well connected to the city’s future urban rail system.
The first phase involves site clearance of more than 21,000sq.m, affecting 59 organisations and households. Compensation, resettlement, and relocation will be arranged for 17 agencies and 42 families.
Technical infrastructure such as water supply and drainage, lighting, and urban amenities, including trash bins, stone benches, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and security cameras, will be upgraded. Relevant authorities will also renovate preserved buildings and relocate underground and above-ground facilities where needed.
The second phase of the project will focus on building a three-level underground space connected to the C9 metro station (Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao line). Engineers will develop technical solutions to ensure the safety of heritage sites during construction.
Local authorities said compensation and resettlement procedures for the first phase will be expedited so that work can begin ahead of Hanoi’s 71st Liberation Day celebrations (October 10, 1954–2025). The subsequent phase will be further reviewed in line with the city’s approved planning guidelines./.
