Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia is strengthening its national logistics system in support of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, with the inauguration and groundbreaking of 1,179 Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) and 18 food security warehouses on February 13.
Speaking at the event, President Prabowo Subianto noted that the MBG programme is designed not only to improve children’s nutrition and health but also to drive economic growth by creating opportunities for farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and low-income groups.
The programme has so far reached more than 60 million beneficiaries nationwide, supported by a network of around 23,000 SPPG units across Indonesia’s 38 provinces. In addition to improving nutritional outcomes, the initiative is helping reduce social disparities, stimulate household consumption and strengthen social welfare.
The SPPG network is also generating employment, with each unit capable of hiring up to 50 workers. Many previously unemployed homemakers now have stable incomes, while rising demand for fish, eggs, poultry, vegetables and other food supplies is supporting small-scale farmers and local businesses.
Alongside the nutrition programme, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) is playing a key role in strengthening logistics and food reserves. This year, Polri plans to build 10 additional food security warehouses, raising the total nationwide to 28, each with a capacity of around 1,000 tonnes.
Polri Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the force currently operates 18 warehouses in 12 regions and is constructing a large-scale facility with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes in the Jakarta metropolitan area./.
