Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian court sentenced extremist Islamic cleric Aman Abdurrahman to death on June 22 over his role in a 2016 terror attack that saw a suicide bomber blow himself up at a Jakarta Starbucks cafe.

Last month, prosecutors demanded that Abdurrahman be handed a death sentence for his role in the attack, which caused four deaths and was first claimed by an IS group in Southeast Asia.

Abdurrahman is considered the head of all IS supporters in Indonesia and the spiritual leader of local extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

Authorities said JAD was involved in the 2016 attack and the wave of suicide bombings in Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya last month. Abdurrahman has not been charged over the Surabaya attacks, which killed 13 people.

According to analysts and authorities, despite being imprisoned since 2010, the man has recruited militants to join IS. He is thought to have been in communication with IS and is the main translator for IS propaganda in Indonesia.-VNA
