Hanoi (VNA) – The upcoming official visit to Vietnam by King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is anticipated to be a historic milestone in bilateral relations, ushering in a new phase of cooperation and setting a cornerstone for stronger collaboration in areas of shared interest.
At the invitation of State President Luong Cuong, the monarch will pay an official visit to Vietnam from November 12 to 13.
Speaking with the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UAE and Jordan Nguyen Thanh Diep noted that the trip takes place as the two countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations (August 9, 1980–2025). It will be the first-ever visit by a top leader of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Vietnam, the first head-of-state/government-level exchange between the two sides since their diplomatic ties were established and, notably, the first trip by a leader of a Middle Eastern state to Vietnam in nine years.
Diep said that in his previous meetings with Vietnamese leaders, the king expressed deep admiration for Vietnam’s people and achievements, and voiced his wish to enhance bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and social fields.
The king used to say that he has special sentiments towards Vietnam and looks forwards to visiting the country as soon as possible, the ambassador shared.
During his stay, the Jordanian King is scheduled to have talks with President Cuong, witness the signing of several cooperation documents, meet with other key leaders of Vietnam, address a Vietnam – Jordan business forum, and attend a textile industry roundtable. He will also lay a wreath at the monument dedicated to war heroes and martyrs on Bac Son street, as well as pay tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at the mausoleum in Hanoi.
Diep expressed his belief that the visit will help create breakthroughs in bilateral relations. In terms of politics and diplomacy, more mutual visits at all levels, especially the high level, will be held while the two countries will maintain close coordination and mutual support at international forums and organisations.
Regarding economic, trade, and investment links, they will promote bilateral trade to reach 500 million USD in turnover by 2030 and 1 billion USD by 2035. Partnerships in food security, the Halal industry, education – training, and development of high-quality human resources in such spheres as information technology, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, green energy, and tourism, which are all potential cooperation areas for both sides, will also be fostered.
Looking back on bilateral relations over the recent past, the ambassador said Vietnam and Jordan have worked closely and supported each other at international forums and organisations.
In 2024, two-way trade reached approximately 190 million USD, with Vietnamese exports accounting for about 95% (nearly 181 million USD), mainly agro-fishery products, electronics, and consumer goods. As of September this year, Jordan had five valid investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of 1 million USD, ranking 108th among 153 countries and territories investing in the Southeast Asian nation, according to Diep./.
