Laos celebrates liberation of Sam Neua town

A meeting was held in Sam Neua town, the Lao northern province of Houaphan, on May 4 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the town.

The event drew Lao Prime MinisterThongsinh Thammavong, Deputy Defence Minister Lieutenant GeneralChansamone Channhalath, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Manh Hung,senior officials of the two countries and Vietnamese war veterans.

Khamhung Huongvongsi, Houaphan’s Governor and Provincial PartyCommittee, recalled the province’s establishment process and therevolutionary spirit in early days of May 60 years ago.

Sam Neua town was liberated on May 5 with the assistance fromVietnamese volunteer soldiers. The town since then became a strong basefor the Lao revolution, he added.

Earlier on May 3, aseminar was held at Vieng Xai relic site, Houaphan province,highlighting the Upper Laos Campaign in 1953 which liberated Sam Neua.-VNA
