Leaders of Cambodian rival parties to resume talks

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and opposition leader Sam Rainsy plan to resume negotiations over the post-election dispute, but no exact date is set, officials said on April 1.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and InteriorMinister Sar Kheng told the media that a top-level meeting for leadersof the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the opposition CambodiaNational Rescue Party (CNRP) is in preparation. However, he declined togive further details. 

CNRP Chief Whip Son Chhay confirmed thatboth sides have been in contact to discuss topics for the meeting,expressing hope that it will come as soon as possible in order to find asolution to the seven-month-old political dispute. 

The disputebetween the two parties has simmered since the July election resultsshowed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against the CNRP’s 55. 

Having boycotted parliament since last September, the CNRP isdemanding either a probe into election irregularities or a re-election,along with deep electoral reform. 

Hun Sen and Sam Rainsy mettwice in September in a bid to resolve their political differences, butthe talks failed to reach any agreement. 

Sam Rainsy said hisparty will hold anti-government protests on May 1, ahead of the councilelection campaign for the second term from May 2-16.-VNA
