Lunar New Year average bonus for workers up 13%

Based on reports from more than 50,000 enterprises which are employing over 4.2 million workers, the Tet bonuses for the 2026 Lunar New Year averaged 8.69 million VND, a 13% increase from the previous year.

Hanoi (VNA) – The average bonus for the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday rose by 13% year on year to 8.69 million VND per employee, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

At the government’s regular press briefing on February 4, Pham Truong Giang, Director of the ministry's Department of Wages and Social Insurance, said the increase reflected the impact of a higher regional minimum wage and early policy implementation that gave businesses sufficient time to prepare.

He noted that the Government issued a decree on November 10, 2025 adjusting the regional minimum wage upward by an average of 7.2%, effective from January 1, 2026, higher than the 6% rise in 2024. The early promulgation helped enterprises plan ahead while boosting workers’ confidence.

According to the official, the average monthly wages reached 9.76 million VND (376 USD) in 2025, up 11% from 2024. State-owned enterprises recorded an average wage of 12.89 million VND per worker per month, up 18.2%.

Domestic private firms paid a monthly average of 8.66 million VND per worker, up 7%, while the average wage at foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) was 10.17 million VND, up 9.6%.

Based on reports from more than 50,000 enterprises which are employing over 4.2 million workers, the Tet bonuses for the 2026 Lunar New Year averaged 8.69 million VND, a 13% increase from the previous year.

State-owned enterprises paid an average bonus of 9.44 million VND, up 23%. Domestic private firms offered 7.37 million VND, up 9%, while FDI firms provided 9.21 million VND, up 12%.

Giang said the coordinated and early rollout of wage policies has helped improve workers’ incomes, stabilise livelihoods, strengthen employee retention, and reduce the risk of spontaneous labour migration. The reasonable wage growth and clear roadmap have also supported productivity gains and created fresh momentum for Vietnam’s targeted double-digit economic growth in 2026 and beyond./.
