Mekong Delta Economic Forum 2014 to be held in Soc Trang

The Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MDEC) 2014 will take place in Soc Trang province from July 5-7, focusing on restructuring the agricultural sector and building new-style areas in the region, announced representatives from the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region at a meeting in Can Tho city on July 4.

Astring of workshops and conferences on how to raise agricultural valuechains and further promote investment in agricultural production will beorganised during the event.

The forum will also discussorientations and plans to foster cooperation between the regionallocalities and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and others across the country.

TheMDEC – Soc Trang 2014 will coincide with the renowned Ok Om BokFestival of the Khmer ethnic people, aiming to promote tourism,investment and trade, and popularise local traditional cultural valuesto domestic and international friends.

Nguyen Phong Quang, deputyhead of the Steering Committee, said this annual event aims to attractmore investment to the region and seek measures to further ensureregional social security.-VNA

FDI inflow into Vietnam surges by nearly 40% in four months

While newly-registered capital declined by 23.8% to 5.59 billion USD, additional capital injections into existing projects increased nearly 3.9 times to 6.4 billion USD. Capital contributions and share purchases in the four months reached 1.83 billion USD, or a 2.1-fold increase year-on-year.

Japanese retailers step up business activities in Vietnam

Aeon – Japan's largest retail group – plans to increase the number of hypermarkets, also known as "Super Supermarket (SSM)" and general merchandise stores (GMS) in Vietnam from 12 as of February 2025 to about 100 stores by 2030. Another large Japanese group, Sumitomo, also aims o open supermarkets in Vietnam, with about 10 stores per year.
