Jakarta (VNA) - A new earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale, shook the Indonesian island of Lombok on August 1 morning, according to the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in West Lombok district, with a depth of 11km. No casualty caused by the earthquake has been reported so far.

Just three days earlier, a 6.4-magtinute quake struck the island on July 29, about 100km west of Bali, leaving 17 people dead and 300 other injured, and damaging thousands of houses and buildings in West Lombok.

Local officials have declared a state of emergency that will last until August 2.

Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.

It is frequently hit by quakes, most of them harmless. However, the region remains acutely alert to tremors that might trigger tsunamis.

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
