Dong Thap (VNA) – Preparations for the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly (NA) and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term are well underway in Dong Thap province, with groundwork at the grassroots level largely completed, according to the provincial election steering committee.
Inspection delegations' assessments show that Party committees, People’s Committees, commune- and ward-level election committees, together with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and socio-political organisations, have carried out tasks in a proactive and coordinated manner. Election steering committees, election committees, subcommittees, support teams and election boards have been fully established while polling stations have been designated and voter lists reviewed and compiled in strict compliance with regulations. Communications, security and order, and preparation of facilities have also been synchronously implemented.
In Tan Phu Dong islet commune, Chairman of the commune People’s Committee Le Thanh Dang said election-related preparations have been carried out seriously and in line with Party guidelines and State law, with key tasks progressing on schedule. Coordination among local authorities, the Fatherland Front and socio-political organisations has ensured effective consultation, personnel preparation, public outreach and security.
Meanwhile, My An Hung commune has set up 29 election teams across its hamlets. Its election committee has instructed local police to review voter data and delineate polling areas using voter management software. Voter lists were publicly posted on February 3 in accordance with regulations.
Local resident Tran Van Tha, 60, said regular broadcasts via the commune’s public address system have helped residents better understand the significance of the election and responsibly exercise their civic rights to choose capable and ethical representatives.
At the third consultative conference held by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thap on February 13, delegates unanimously approved a final list of 22 local qualified candidates for the 16th NA. The conference also endorsed 142 candidates for the provincial People’s Council for the 2026–2031 term, with full consensus among attendees.
Phan Van Thang, Standing Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, said the three-round consultation process has translated the principle of “people know, people discuss, people choose” into practice, with the third round finalising candidate lists for voters to select on the election day, March 15.
He urged Fatherland Front bodies at all levels to organise effective voter meetings with candidates, intensify communications to maximise voter turnout, ensure security and order, and strengthen supervision and the timely handling of complaints so the election proceeds safely, democratically and lawfully.
According to the provincial election committee, Dong Thap has established six NA election boards and 28 others for the provincial People’s Council election. At the grassroots level, 102 election committees for NA deputies and 712 election boards for commune-level People’s Councils have been formed. The province will elect 85 provincial People’s Council deputies and 2,331 commune-level deputies.
All communes and wards have completed the division of constituencies into polling areas. Across the province, 2,002 polling stations are now in place, serving more than 3.2 million voters./.
