Can Tho (VNA) – National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man on July 2 visited the Party Committee of the Military Region 9 High Command, assigning them specific tasks in the context of new requirements for building an elite, lean, and powerful army.
At a working session in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, the leader highlighted achievements Vietnam has recorded over the past time thanks to joint efforts, with macro economy stabilised, major economic balances ensured, and inflation controlled.
Party and State leaders have paid due attention to national defence and military affairs in localities, he said, adding that the fight against corruption and other negative phenomena has also made progress.
The NA Chairman hailed forces in Military Region 9 for their significant contributions to the national defence and military work.
The region encompasses the 12 Mekong Delta localities of Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, An Giang, Kien Giang, and Can Tho city.
Stressing the region’s strategic position, Man asked the Party Committee to continue popularising resolutions, conclusions, and directives of the Party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission, while raising the efficiency of defence diplomacy.
It is a must to keep a close watch on the situation, and give timely forecasts and proposals to the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence, and coordinate with all-level Party Committees and local authorities in handling emerging issues, he said.
The forces should play a more active role in poverty reduction, new-style rural area building, socio-cultural development, natural disaster prevention and control, climate change response, and search and rescue operations, the leader continued.
He urged the region to team up with other relevant forces and local authorities in the crime combat, and work to foil plots by hostile forces.
The top legislator also stressed the need to pay more heed to the material and spiritual life of officers and soldiers, especially those working in border and island, and disadvantaged areas.
On this occasion, Man presented gifts to officers and soldiers who are war invalids, and children of martyrs, war invalids and those who rendered services to the nation./.
