Northern region warned of extreme weather

Provinces and cities in the northeast and north central regions are set to see heavy rain of up to 40-120mm on April 26, said the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Hanoi (VNA) - Provinces and cities in the northeast and north central regions areset to see heavy rain of up to 40-120mm on April26, said the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The regionsmay experience showers and thunderstorms over the next few days,bringing risks of flash floods, landslides and flooding in mountainousprovinces.

The warningon the level of natural disaster risk caused by cyclones, lightning and hail isat level one out of five for the northeastand north-central regions.

Lai Chau, LaoCai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Bac Kan and Lang Son provinces are seen as mostat-risk.

To minimisedamage caused by extreme weather, the Standing Office of the Central SteeringCommittee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has issued a documentasking provinces and cities to closely monitor developments of storms, flashfloods, landslides and flooding.

Theyshould review the safety of citizens' houses and prepare response plansfor if a natural disaster occurs.

Provincesand cities in the north and north central regions should direct agencies tocoordinate with communication agencies, especially at the grassroots level, toguide people on how to respond to natural disasters to minimise damage.

Agencieswill give reports on the situation of natural disasters and damage to theStanding Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural DisasterPrevention and Control.

Chairman ofthe Lai Chau People's Committee Tran Tien Dung said the committee hadasked localities and people to prepare for natural disasters.

Thecommittee has strengthened its Steering Committee for Natural DisasterPrevention and Control and Search and Rescue from provincial to grassrootslevels, assigning tasks to members and inspecting branches andlocalities' natural disaster prevention and control plans.

The provincewill relocate households out of areas at risk of landslides and flash floods,warn passersby on flooded roads, and not let people collect firewood, catchfish or wade across streams when it is flooding.

Lai Chau’sDepartment of Agriculture and Rural Development will supervise the operation ofreservoirs, while the owners of dams and reservoirs will be responsible forproviding information related to their operation to provincial and districtauthorities./.
