Party chief meets key US senator

Meeting the visitingUS Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy on April 17 in Hanoi ,the Party leader said he wishes to witness new progress in thefriendship and bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and the US ,particularly when both countries are celebrating the 20th anniversarysince they normalised their relations.

Vietnam ,with its consistent external policies of independence, self-reliance withhopes for multilarisation and diversification of relations as well asinternational integration, considers the US as a top importantpartner, he said.

He suggested that the two sidesmaintain and increase ties at all levels. Vietnam hopes that the USfosters its partnership with Vietnam within the current frameworksand realms.

For his part, Leahy briefed his host on the fruitful outcomes of his working sessions with Vietnamese leaders.

Praising the rising position of Vietnam in the region and the world,he affirmed that the Parliament and Government of the US are keen onstrengthening multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam , effectivelyrealising the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership that was setup in last July.

He expressed special interest inthe development of ties between the two parliaments, voicing his supportfor the establishment of bilateral relationship via party channels.

He appreciated Vietnam ’s goodwill and cooperation in seeking missingUS soldiers in the war, pledging that his country will continue itsefforts to work with Vietnam in dealing with the war consequencesfaced by the people and environment of Vietnam .

During the meeting, General Secretary Trong and the US senators alsodiscussed regional and international issues of mutual concern.

They also underscored the importance of bilateral affiliation inmaintaining peace, stability, prosperity and development in the regionand the world.-VNA
