PM welcomes US Treasury Secretary

PM Nguyen Tan Dung has pressed for the prompt signing of the Vietnam–US double taxation avoidance agreement and conclusion of the TPP negotiations this year as committed by leaders of member nations.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has pressed for the prompt signing of theVietnam–US double taxation avoidance agreement and conclusion of theTrans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations this year as committed byleaders of member nations.

PM Dung made the remarks whenreceiving visiting US Secretary of Treasury Jacob J. Lew in Hanoion November 14, asking the US to recognise Vietnam as a marketeconomy.

The PM added Vietnam will closely coordinate with theUS in the TPP talks, saying that there should be flexibilities thatmatch each nation’s development pace during the process towards reachinga deal that balances its members’ interests.

As a member ofthe World Trade Organisation (WTO), Vietnam always abides bycommitments reached in the past, and actively applies the market economyand works to integrate the country with the world economy for rapid andsustainable development, he said.

The host also hailedwhat was reached at the working session between the US Department ofTreasury and the Vietnamese Finance Ministry as well as theircollaboration over the past time, especially in technical assistance intaxation, public accounting, one-door customs and macro-economicanalysis models.

The PM pointed to economic, trade andinvestment areas where, according to him, even more can be done tobenefit both sides.

Lew, for his part, said the US highlyvalues Vietnam’s involvement in the TPP negotiations and hopes forits flexibility in negotiating e-payment and market expansion.

He vowed that the US will actively step up talks on the doubletaxation avoidance agreement between the two nations.

Hesaid his visit is meant to foster financial and monetary cooperationwith Vietnam, stressing that the US pays special attention toworking closely with Vietnam across diverse realms, especiallyeconomics, trade and investment.-VNA
