At a conference to mobilise investment for the environmental protection of the river held on April 6 in the coastal city of Vung Tau by the Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), the PCD said that the Dong Nai River basin has been polluted by organic and suspended solid substances and many sections of the river are already dead.
Inspection at the Hoa An water plant, situated by the Dong Nai River, showed that the index of banned substances including oils and californium did not come up to national water standards.
At the event, which attracted businesses from 11 provinces downstream of the Dong Nai river basin, the EPF provided information on the government’s supportive financial policies and the requirements set out for environmental work including the necessary procedures to access loans from the fund as well how to restore the environment after mining for minerals.
Established in 2002, the EPF has so far granted loans to 12 projects on the Dong Nai River at a cost of 97 million VND.
The Dong Nai River system, including the Dong Nai, Sai Gon, Vam Co and Thi Vai rivers, provides roughly 36.6 billion cubic metres of water to 15 million residents, industry, agriculture and the tourism sector in 11 cities and provinces in the region.
Domestic and industrial waste from about 43,800 enterprises and 490 craft villages operating in the region have already seriously threatened water sources from the Dong Nai river basin./.
