Protecting millennia-old ancient road in My Son

After concluding the archaeological excavation of the ancient pathway leading to the K Tower in the My Son World Cultural Heritage Site in the central province of Quang Nam, the Management Board of the site in coordination with the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Archaeology have devised a preservation plan with the aim of protecting the original values of the ancient road.

To preserve the road's original values, experts from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Archaeology and the Management Board of the My Son World Cultural Heritage Site assessed its condition. They identified threats from human impacts and weather, especially during the rainy season, and proposed scientific solutions and materials for urgent preservation.

The proposed urgent preservation measures include using compatible materials for building underground drainage from the excavation site, creating rainwater diversion trenches from the northern hills, constructing protective covers, and installing soft barriers. These measures aim to prevent water damage and protect the road, which was the main pathway for the ancient Cham people to My Son for religious ceremonies.

Protecting the original values of this newly discovered ancient road clarifies the significance of previously unknown architectural works in My Son, providing new insights into the cultural, historical, and architectural space of this world cultural heritage site./.
