The Third International Puppetry Festival kicked off on Sept.4 at Hanoi Opera House, attracting the participation of Vietnamese and foreign art troupes from all over the world.

The festival was co-sponsored by the Ha Noi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Department of Performing Arts with the goal of boosting co-operative relations in culture and art between Vietnam and other nations.

"It is also a chance for Vietnamese artists to introduce the unique art of water puppetry and exchange experiences with foreign artists in order to create high-quality pieces," said Vuong Duy Bien, head of the performing arts department.

Held from September 4 to 9, the festival offers an opportunity for Vietnamese audiences to enjoy traditional puppetry from all over the world.

Fourteen troupes from China, Cambodia, Egypt, Indonesia, Israel, Thailand, Turkey, the Philippines, and the host country Vietnam will each perform one 30-40 minute piece in hopes of winning gold and silver medals and cash awards.

Performances by Vietnamese troupes including Vietnam Puppet Theatre, Thang Long Puppet Theatre and puppet troupes from the central province of Ha Tinh and the Central Highlands province of Dac Lac will have their premieres at the festival.

The five members of the panel are Vietnamese and international puppetry artists who will give prizes to the best art conductor, director, puppet designer, musician and choreographer.

The event will take place at the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre, 361 Truong Chinh Street and the Military Theatre, 14 Ho Tung Mau Street . Public performances will be held at Hong Ha Theatre; Ho Tay Water Park and the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre.
